What to Ask Before Installing a Second EV Charger
If your household is adding a second electric vehicle, or if you want the flexibility to charge a visitor's car, adding a second Level 2 charger seems like a natural next step. In many cases it is — but it's a project worth thinking through more carefully than simply replicating the first installation.
Here's what deserves consideration before you schedule the work.
Understand What the First Installation Used
The starting point is understanding what capacity the first charger installation drew from your panel and how the circuit was set up. This information shapes what's available for a second charger.
If your electrician pulled a permit for the first charger — as a licensed electrician should — there's a record of what was installed. Knowing the circuit configuration of the existing charger helps the electrician assess what's feasible for a second one without doing a full panel evaluation from scratch.
Bring this information when you call. If you don't have it, a brief review of the existing installation is usually the first step.
Panel Capacity: Is There Enough Left?
Panel capacity that was adequate for one EV charger may or may not comfortably support two. The question is how much capacity was available to begin with, and how much was consumed by the first installation — along with any other changes to the home's electrical load since then.
For a home with a recently upgraded or generously sized panel, adding a second charger may be entirely straightforward. For a home where the first charger installation was close to the panel's practical limits, a second charger requires a more creative approach.
This is a calculation that requires an electrician to look at your actual panel — not a general rule that applies to all situations.
Load Management Becomes More Valuable With Two Chargers
This is one of the strongest use cases for load management technology. When two chargers share a load management controller, the system distributes available capacity between them based on real-time household demand and each car's charging needs.
If both cars are plugged in during an evening when overall household demand is moderate, both charge at a useful rate. If household demand spikes, the system reduces charging output for one or both chargers to avoid overloading the panel. If one car is full and the other isn't, the available capacity concentrates on the car that needs it.
This is often more cost-effective and less disruptive than installing two fully independent circuits sized for simultaneous full-power operation — and it may be the approach that makes a second charger feasible without a panel upgrade.
Placement: Where Will the Second Charger Go?
The obvious location for a second charger is next to the first one. This is often the most practical choice — existing conduit runs are nearby, the circuit routing is simpler, and both chargers are in a familiar location.
But it's worth thinking through whether the second parking spot is actually adjacent to the first. In a two-car garage, the outlets need to serve whichever side each car parks on. In a home where one vehicle parks in the garage and another parks on a driveway or carport, the second charger may need to go in a different location entirely.
A charger that's in the wrong spot — mounted for the convenience of the electrician rather than the car owner — creates daily inconvenience. Think through parking logistics before finalizing placement.

- Do you recommend a load management system for two chargers, and what hardware does that involve?
- Where is the most practical placement for the second charger given where our cars actually park?

A Note on DIY and Non-Permitted Work
Homes where the first EV charger was installed without a permit, or installed by someone without a license, create complications for adding a second. The work may be fine or may not be — but there's no documentation to build on, and an electrician may need to assess the existing installation before they can responsibly size a second circuit.
