Peak Summer Solar: How to Know if Your System Is Performing Well
For most solar owners, summer feels like it should be straightforward: long days, strong sun, high production. And that's often true. But without a clear baseline for what good performance looks like, it's hard to know whether your system is actually delivering what it should.
Some homeowners ignore their monitoring app entirely until something goes wrong. Others check it obsessively but don't know how to interpret what they're seeing. This guide helps you find a middle ground — reading your monitoring data meaningfully, without needing to become a solar technician.
Why Summer Numbers Are the Benchmark
Solar panels produce power in proportion to the sunlight they receive — both intensity and duration. Summer provides the highest combination of both. This means your summer production numbers represent the ceiling for what your system can do. If you're well below that ceiling during peak summer conditions, it's worth investigating.
The challenge is that "peak summer" looks different in different places. In New Mexico, summer brings both exceptional sun and the monsoon season, which arrives in late June and extends through September. During monsoon weeks, cloud cover and afternoon storms can reduce daily production significantly compared to dry June days. This is expected seasonal variation, not a system problem.
Knowing the typical pattern for your area helps you separate normal variation from actual underperformance.
Understanding Your Monitoring Data
Most solar monitoring apps show you a few key numbers:
Daily production (kWh): How much energy your system generated on a given day. This is the primary metric to watch.
System output (kW): The real-time generation rate at any given moment. On a clear midsummer day at noon, this should be near the system's rated capacity.
Historical charts: How today's production compares to previous days, weeks, or the same time last year.
The most useful comparison is year-over-year: how does today compare to the same week last year? If your system was well-maintained a year ago and today's numbers are notably lower, that's a signal worth following up on.
Another useful comparison is against similar weather days. If a neighbor or online reference shows what a system of your approximate size in your region typically produces on a clear summer day, you can benchmark your numbers against that range.
Common Causes of Summer Underperformance
If your monitoring suggests you're running below expected production during good weather, a few things are worth considering:
Soiling. Dust, bird droppings, and pollen accumulate on panels. In dry, dusty conditions — common in New Mexico summers before the monsoon arrives — a film of dust can reduce output meaningfully. Panels in most climates don't need frequent washing, but in especially dusty conditions, a rinse can restore output.
Shading. Trees grow. New construction nearby can cast shadows. A shading source that didn't exist when your system was installed might now be affecting production during part of the day. Monitoring data can help identify this — look for output curves that drop off earlier than expected in the afternoon.
Inverter issues. The inverter converts DC power from your panels into AC power for your home. If it's not functioning correctly, production drops. Many monitoring apps flag inverter alerts directly, but not all do.
Panel degradation. Panels degrade gradually over time, which is normal and expected. If you're seeing a steep drop rather than a slow year-over-year decline, that's worth investigating.
What Good Monitoring Practice Looks Like
You don't need to check your monitoring app every day. But a weekly glance during summer, when your system should be near peak, lets you catch issues early. A few practices that help:
- Note your daily production on your best clear-day weeks and save those numbers. That's your baseline.
- Look at the monitoring app's alerts section, not just the production chart. Alerts often surface issues before you'd notice them in the numbers.
- If something seems off, look at two or three consecutive days before assuming it's a problem. One bad day is usually weather.
When to Call a Service Professional
If your monitoring shows production that's consistently 15-20% or more below what it was in a comparable period last year — and you can't explain it with obvious weather differences — it's time for a professional assessment. Similarly, if your monitoring app shows panel-level errors, communication failures, or inverter alerts that don't clear on their own, those warrant a look.
