What Interconnection Actually Means

Interconnection is the formal relationship between your solar system and the utility's electrical grid. When your system generates more electricity than your home is using at any moment, that surplus flows back into the grid. For this to happen safely and legally, the utility needs to approve the system design and confirm it meets technical requirements for grid-tied operation.

The interconnection process typically happens between the solar installation company, the electrician, and the utility — not directly between the homeowner and the utility in most cases. What Is Net Metering?

Net metering is the billing mechanism that makes solar financially viable for most homeowners. What Happens During a Power Outage?

This is one of the most common points of confusion for new solar homeowners. A standard grid-tied solar system automatically shuts off when the grid goes down. It does not continue supplying power to your home during an outage, even when the sun is shining.

This is an intentional safety feature. Utility workers repairing downed lines need to know that connected systems aren't energizing those lines. A grid-tied system that stayed on during an outage would be a hazard.

What is the current wait time for interconnection approval? Utility timelines vary. In busy periods, interconnection approval can take several weeks after installation, which delays the PTO date.

Does the system design I'm considering have any special interconnection requirements? Some battery configurations, multi-system setups, or export limitations require additional documentation.

How will changes to net metering policy affect systems already installed? Utilities sometimes grandfather existing systems into current terms when policy changes. Ask your utility what protections apply to systems installed today.
