How Lightning Affects Electrical Systems and What Protects Them

Lightning and home electrical systems have an uncomfortable relationship. A strike doesn't have to hit your house directly to cause damage — induced surges can travel through utility lines, phone lines, and cable into your home and damage sensitive electronics along the way. Understanding how this works helps homeowners make better decisions about protection.

How Lightning Reaches Your Home's Wiring

There are two main pathways for lightning-related electrical damage:

Direct strikes. If lightning strikes your home, a nearby tree, or the utility line serving your property, the energy can couple directly into your home's electrical system. Direct strikes are relatively rare at any individual home, but the damage potential is high.

Indirect surges (induced transients). More commonly, a lightning strike in the general vicinity — within several hundred feet, or farther on the utility distribution network — induces a voltage surge that travels down the grid and enters your home through the service entrance. This is the more frequent cause of lightning-related appliance damage, and it happens even in storms where nothing visually dramatic occurs at your property.

Once a surge enters through the service entrance, it can travel through your home's branch circuits and reach anything that's plugged in or hardwired: televisions, computers, smart devices, appliances with electronic controls, and increasingly complex HVAC systems.

What Makes Modern Homes More Vulnerable

Older homes with simple electrical profiles — basic appliances, no electronics to speak of — were less vulnerable to surge damage because there wasn't much to damage. Modern homes are filled with sensitive electronics: smart TVs, computers, smart thermostats, network equipment, EV charger control units, solar inverters, battery management systems. Each of these has electronics that can be damaged or destroyed by a voltage transient.

The more electronics in your home, the more there is to protect.

Levels of Surge Protection

Surge protection is available at multiple levels, and they're complementary rather than interchangeable.

Point-of-use surge protectors are the familiar power strips and wall adapters that plug into an outlet and protect the devices connected to them. They're widely used and provide a meaningful layer of protection for equipment directly connected. They do not protect hardwired appliances or devices that aren't connected to them.

Whole-home surge protection at the panel is installed at the main electrical panel by a licensed electrician and provides a first layer of protection for the entire home. A panel-level device clamps surges entering through the service entrance before they reach branch circuits. This is sometimes called a Type 1 or Type 2 device depending on where in the service sequence it's installed.

The layered approach — panel-level protection combined with point-of-use protectors for sensitive electronics — is generally considered the most thorough strategy. Panel-level protection handles the bulk of the incoming surge; point-of-use protectors handle any residual transient energy that gets through.

After a Significant Storm

If your area experienced a severe thunderstorm with nearby lightning, a few post-storm habits are worth building:

Check your electronics. If any device behaves unusually — won't turn on, has display issues, functions intermittently — a surge event may have caused partial damage.

Check your surge protectors. Many point-of-use surge protectors include an indicator light that shows whether the protection element is still functional. After a significant surge, the protection component may have sacrificed itself — meaning the device is now just a power strip with no protective function.

Look at your solar or battery monitoring. Systems with electronic components will sometimes log or display a fault code after a surge event. A quick check of monitoring apps after a storm is a reasonable habit.

The Geographic Reality in New Mexico

New Mexico has some of the highest lightning activity in the western United States. The summer monsoon season — roughly July through September — brings regular afternoon and evening thunderstorms across the state. This isn't a reason to be alarmed, but it does mean that surge protection is a practical consideration for New Mexico homeowners rather than a remote contingency.
