Preparing Your Home for a Level 2 EV Charger: What to Check First
Deciding to install a home EV charger is usually the easy part. The more useful preparation happens before you call an electrician — a quick self-assessment of your home's setup that makes the first conversation faster, more specific, and more likely to produce an accurate estimate.
None of this requires electrical expertise. You're just gathering information that your electrician will ask for anyway.
Look at Your Electrical Panel
Your electrical panel — usually a metal box in the garage, utility closet, laundry room, or basement — is the starting point for any EV charger installation. Here's what to note:
Where is it located? The distance and path between the panel and your intended charger location affects the complexity of the installation. A panel in a detached garage 60 feet from the house is a different project than a panel 10 feet away in an attached garage.
How old does it look? This is a rough question, but it matters. Panels from the last few decades typically have room for additional breakers, though your electrician will verify. Very old panels — or any panel that a previous inspection identified as outdated — may warrant a conversation about whether an upgrade is appropriate before adding new circuits.
Is there a brand name visible on the panel? Some older panel brands have known service histories that electricians will want to know about. You don't need to research this yourself — just noting it helps.
Look at Your Garage or Parking Area
Most Level 2 chargers are installed in attached garages, detached garages, or carports. Walk through the space with fresh eyes:
Where do you usually park the car? The charger should be installed within cord reach of your typical parking position — usually 18–20 feet of cord is standard, but you don't want the cable dragging across the floor or straining against the charger.
Which side of the car is the charging port on? This determines which wall makes sense for mounting. Installing the charger on the wrong side means wrapping the cable around the car.
Is there existing conduit or wiring in the garage? Sometimes prior owners ran conduit for a workshop or welder. This might simplify things or, if it's old and in poor condition, warrant evaluation.
Is there an existing 240-volt outlet? Dryer outlets, welder outlets, and range outlets are all 240-volt. If one is already near the parking area, that's worth mentioning — though whether it's appropriate for an EV charger is something your electrician will assess.
For Detached Garages and Carports
If your charging location is separate from the main house, the project has additional considerations. How does power currently reach the detached structure — is there a sub-panel or just a few circuits? Is the connection between house and garage above ground or underground?
You don't need to know the answers to all of these, but knowing whether your detached garage already has functional electrical service is useful.
Questions to Have Ready When You Call
When you reach out to an electrician, here's what to be ready to describe:
- Approximate age of the home (helps with panel age context)
- Location of the electrical panel relative to the garage
- Whether parking is in an attached garage, detached garage, or carport
- Which side of the car the charging port is on
- Any existing 240-volt outlets in the area
- Whether you have a specific charger unit already or want recommendations
Having these details ready doesn't guarantee a remote estimate — most electricians need a site visit to give a firm quote — but it makes the first call much more efficient.
A Note on New Mexico Homes
Albuquerque and Rio Rancho include a mix of housing vintages, from mid-century ranch homes to newer construction in newer subdivisions. The electrical considerations vary significantly between these.
