What Homeowners Should Know About Home Battery Installation

Adding a home battery system involves a more involved process than most appliance installations. There's equipment to assess, utility coordination, permits, and a commissioning step before the system is fully operational. Understanding the sequence helps set realistic expectations about timeline and what you'll need to participate in.

Step One: Site Assessment

Before a battery system can be specified or quoted, a technician or electrician needs to see your home's electrical setup. The site assessment typically covers:

Main panel location and capacity. The battery system connects to the main panel, and in some configurations, to a sub-panel that serves the circuits you want backed up. The electrician needs to evaluate your panel's current state and how the battery will interface with it.

Proposed mounting location. Home batteries are heavy — most units are wall-mounted and require a sturdy surface, typically a garage wall, utility room wall, or exterior wall with appropriate shelter. The location needs to be within a reasonable distance of the panel and meet any manufacturer requirements for temperature and ventilation.

Whether you have solar. If your home already has solar, the battery integrates differently than a standalone installation. The inverter type and configuration affect which batteries are compatible and what the installation looks like.

Utility considerations. Some battery configurations require notification to your utility, an updated interconnection agreement, or specific equipment settings to comply with grid export rules. Your electrician should be familiar with local utility requirements.

Mounting and Physical Installation

Battery systems vary in size and weight, but most residential units are substantial. The installation team will anchor the unit to the wall, run conduit and wiring between the battery and the panel, and install any transfer switch or gateway hardware required for the backup configuration.

In most homes, this is a garage installation — the panel is nearby, the surface is appropriate, and the temperature range is acceptable. If the panel is inside the house, or if no interior wall space is available, the electrician will discuss alternatives during the site visit.

Plan for some disruption on installation day. The power will need to be off briefly for the panel work. The installation team will need access to the panel, the battery mounting location, and potentially an attic or crawlspace for conduit runs.

Utility Coordination

Depending on your utility and the system configuration, the installation may require notification to the utility before commissioning. This is often handled by the contractor but may require a signature or approval from the homeowner. Ask your electrician what utility steps are involved and what your role is in that process.

If you're adding battery storage to an existing solar system, there may also be a need to update the interconnection agreement with the utility. This can add time to the process — sometimes weeks — so knowing about it in advance helps set timeline expectations.

Permits and Inspection

Battery installations typically require a permit and inspection, just like a panel upgrade or EV charger installation. The permit is usually handled by your contractor. The inspection happens after installation is complete but before the system is officially commissioned.

Ask your electrician how long the permit and inspection process typically takes in your municipality, as this varies. Knowing the inspection is pending helps you plan — you'll want to have someone available to allow inspector access if required.

Testing and Commissioning

Once the installation is complete and any required inspections are done, the system goes through a commissioning process. This involves:

What 'Done' Looks Like

A fully commissioned battery system means: the system is producing and storing energy, the monitoring app shows live data, backup function has been tested, and all permits are closed. If solar is integrated, the combined system should be showing expected production and storage patterns.
