How Heat Waves Create Electrical Stress in Homes

Albuquerque's summer heat can be intense. Triple-digit temperatures aren't unusual during July and August, and during extended heat events, homes run their cooling systems continuously — sometimes for days without significant nighttime relief. That prolonged, elevated electrical load creates conditions worth understanding if you want to stay ahead of potential problems.

Why Heat Waves Are Different From Normal Load

A home's electrical system is designed to handle its expected loads with some margin for safety. Normal daily use cycles up and down — appliances run and turn off, loads vary by room and time of day. During a heat wave, the load profile changes: cooling runs nearly continuously, refrigerators and freezers work harder to maintain temperature, and household activity that generates heat (cooking, laundry) may overlap with the cooling load rather than spacing out through the day.

This sustained, simultaneous loading is different from occasional peak demand. Sustained heat causes components to run warmer for longer, which stresses insulation, connections, and components in ways that brief peak loads don't.

Components That Feel the Stress

The main panel and breakers. Breakers that are at or near their rated capacity during normal use are more likely to show stress during extended heat events. A breaker that has been operating close to its limits for years may begin to fail — tripping more readily, running warm to the touch, or in rare cases showing other signs of degradation.

Connections throughout the system. Electrical connections that are slightly loose or corroded have higher resistance, which means they generate more heat under load. That heat accelerates oxidation, which increases resistance further. During extended high-load periods, this feedback cycle can advance faster than it would under normal conditions.

Outdoor and exposed wiring. Heat affects the insulation on wiring. Outdoor conduit on a south-facing wall in Albuquerque can get extremely hot during summer. Most wiring and conduit are rated for significant heat, but very old insulation or wiring that's been damaged or exposed can behave differently under thermal stress.

Older panels with aluminum wiring. Some homes from certain construction eras have aluminum branch circuit wiring. Aluminum and copper expand and contract at different rates under thermal cycling. Connections in homes with aluminum wiring are worth particular attention from a licensed electrician.

Warning Signs to Watch For

During or after a heat event, pay attention to:

Breakers tripping repeatedly on circuits that don't usually trip. One trip on a heavily loaded circuit is one thing. Multiple trips on the same circuit — especially one that doesn't typically trip — is worth investigating.

Warm or hot outlet covers or switch plates. Some warmth is normal, but a noticeably hot outlet or switch cover suggests a connection running hotter than it should.

A burning smell or the smell of hot plastic. This is a serious sign and warrants turning off the affected circuit and calling a licensed electrician promptly.

Lights that flicker under heavy load. Voltage sags from simultaneous high loads can cause visible flickering. Occasional flicker is usually benign, but frequent flickering suggests a system under stress.

Circuit breakers that feel warm when you open the panel. Some warmth is expected in a loaded panel, but unusually hot breakers suggest a component that's working harder than normal.

When to Have the System Evaluated

If your home is older and hasn't had an electrical inspection in some years, or if you've noticed any of the warning signs above during a heat event, having a licensed electrician evaluate the panel and visible connections is a reasonable step — not because failure is imminent, but because identifying marginal components before they fail is far less disruptive than dealing with a failure during a heat wave.

A panel that's at or near capacity for current loads, and that's supporting an air conditioning system plus other modern loads, is a candidate for a capacity assessment. This is especially relevant for mid-century Albuquerque homes that have had appliances and loads added over the decades without corresponding electrical system upgrades.
