How to Evaluate Your Home's Energy Resilience Before Winter
As days shorten and the weather becomes less predictable, fall is a natural time to think about your home's preparedness for power disruptions. Winter outages — from ice storms, high winds, or grid stress during cold snaps — tend to be more consequential than summer interruptions, because the house can become genuinely uncomfortable or unsafe without heat and light.

Step One: Catalog What You'd Lose
Walk through your home mentally and think about what stops working when the grid goes down:
Heat. This depends heavily on your heating system. A natural gas furnace still needs electricity for the igniter, thermostat, and air handler fan — it won't run during an outage without a generator or battery backup. Homes with electric baseboard heat lose all heating during an outage. Communication and work. Phones can charge from a charged power bank for a day or two. Laptops vary. A home that's also a workplace has a different calculus than a purely residential household.

Now evaluate your current backup capability honestly:
Do you have any battery backup or generator? If so, what circuits does it cover, and for how long under realistic load?
Do you have solar? Solar panels without battery storage don't help during a grid outage — the system shuts down for safety when the grid goes down. Solar with battery backup changes the picture.
Do you have portable backup options? Power banks, portable battery stations, and generators are common partial solutions. Understanding their limits — what they can actually power, for how long — is part of the honest assessment.
Step Three: Identify the Gap
The gap between what you'd lose and what you have is your starting point for a productive electrician conversation. Some common gap scenarios:
No backup at all. A household that has no backup currently and wants to evaluate options is starting from scratch. A good electrician will help prioritize loads and right-size a system.
Battery backup that's undersized or unconfigured. Some homes have battery systems that were installed without careful load prioritization. The battery may technically exist but isn't doing the most important job during an actual outage.
Generator without whole-home transfer. A portable generator is a common partial solution, but using it safely requires understanding what not to power from it and how to connect it properly. Improper generator connections are a genuine safety concern.
Solar without storage. Homeowners who have solar panels and want to use that investment during outages need storage. This is a specific and common gap.

Bringing the output of this exercise to an electrician — a list of what you'd lose, what you currently have, and what your priorities are — leads to a much more specific and useful conversation than asking "should I get a backup system?"
The electrician can then assess your panel, evaluate your solar situation if applicable, walk through battery sizing options, and give you a realistic picture of what different configurations cost and what they deliver.
