EV Charger and Garage Wiring: What Homeowners Often Overlook
Most EV charger installations go smoothly, but there are a handful of details that homeowners consistently wish they'd thought about before the electrician arrived. None of these are deal-breakers — they're practical considerations that affect how well the installation works for daily use.
Cord Management and Outlet Height
The height at which a charger is mounted determines how the charging cable hangs — and that matters more than people expect in a garage where space is at a premium.
A charger mounted at a standard outlet height (low on the wall) means the cord drapes down and sits on the floor when not in use, where cars drive over it, people trip on it, and dirt accumulates. A charger mounted higher — typically four to five feet off the ground — allows the cord to hang clear of the floor.
Before installation, think about where the car will be parked and where the cord will land at rest. Some homeowners want a cord hook or hanger integrated into the installation. Others use a wall-mounted holster that holds the connector when not in use. If cord management matters to you, mention it before installation starts — not after the charger is already mounted.
Vehicle Charging Port Location
Level 2 chargers are mounted on a wall. The charging port on your car is on a specific side — left, right, or sometimes the front or rear. The charger should be on the same side of the parking space as the port, and close enough that the cable reaches without straining.
This sounds obvious until you're standing in your garage with an electrician and realize the only convenient circuit run is on the opposite wall from your charging port. Walk through the parking scenario before the installation starts. Park the car where you'd normally park it and identify which wall the cord would naturally reach.
Also consider: if you'll eventually add a second EV, or if visitors with EVs will want to charge, does your placement accommodate that, or does it hard-code to one specific vehicle orientation?
Conduit Routing in Finished Garages
In an unfinished garage with exposed studs, conduit can run through the framing cleanly and invisibly. In a finished garage with drywall, things get more complicated.
Surface-mounted conduit on a finished wall is functionally fine but visually prominent. If aesthetics in your garage matter — if it doubles as a workshop, a home gym, or just a space you spend time in — it's worth discussing with your electrician whether any options exist to run conduit more discreetly.
For most homeowners, surface-mounted conduit is perfectly acceptable. But being surprised by it on installation day is avoidable.
Panel Access and Circuit Planning
If your electrical panel is in the garage, the circuit run to the charger is typically short and simple. If the panel is on the opposite end of the house, the run is longer and may go through walls, under the floor, or through the attic.
Knowing the routing path in advance helps set expectations for labor time and, in some cases, whether any drywall or flooring will be disturbed. Most electricians avoid disturbing finished surfaces when possible, but very long runs sometimes require access holes that need patching afterward. Ask whether this is likely for your specific layout.
Future-Proofing: Second Vehicle or Higher Capacity
Some homeowners add one EV charger today knowing they'll likely add a second EV in the next few years. If that's your situation, mentioning it now can affect circuit planning. Running conduit for a second circuit at the same time as the first — before the wall is finished or patched — is far easier than returning later.
Similarly, if there's any chance you'll want a higher-capacity circuit in the future, discussing that early allows the panel work to accommodate it without needing a second trip to the breaker box.
A Note for New Mexico Garages
In Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, many homes have carports rather than enclosed garages, or garages that are partially or fully detached. Outdoor or semi-exposed installations need weatherproof-rated enclosures and conduit appropriate for UV exposure and temperature extremes. Make sure your electrician knows whether the charger location is fully sheltered, partially exposed, or fully outdoors — it affects equipment selection.
