Energy arbitrage is the practice of buying something when it's cheap, storing it, and using or selling it when it's expensive. In the context of home energy, it means charging a battery when electricity costs less — typically overnight on a time-of-use rate — and then using that stored electricity instead of pulling from the grid when rates are higher.
The concept is straightforward. Whether it's practical for your home depends on several factors worth thinking through before buying equipment.
How the Basic Logic Works
Time-of-use (TOU) electricity rates set different prices for electricity at different times of day. During high-demand periods — typically weekday afternoons and evenings — the rate per kilowatt-hour is higher. During low-demand periods, usually late night and early morning, the rate is lower.
A home battery can be programmed to charge during low-rate periods and discharge during high-rate periods. If the difference between the rates is meaningful, and if the battery has enough capacity to shift a significant portion of your daily use, this changes what you're paying for grid electricity.
The key word is shift. Energy arbitrage with a home battery isn't about selling electricity back to the grid for profit in the way a utility-scale system might. It's about shifting your consumption from expensive hours to cheap hours.
What Affects Whether This Is Practical
Your rate plan. For energy arbitrage to work, you need a rate plan that has meaningful differences between peak and off-peak prices. Not all utility plans work this way. Some residential customers are on flat-rate plans where every kilowatt-hour costs the same regardless of when it's used. On a flat-rate plan, there's nothing to arbitrage.
Ask your utility whether you're currently on a TOU plan and, if not, whether you can opt into one. Also ask how your TOU rates are structured — the difference between peak and off-peak rates varies by utility and by season.
Your battery's capacity and your home's loads. A small battery relative to your home's usage can only shift a fraction of your daily consumption. A battery sized to cover several hours of your home's typical evening load shifts more. The economics of arbitrage depend on how much load you're actually able to shift.
Charging efficiency losses. Batteries aren't perfectly efficient — some energy is lost in the charge and discharge cycle. This is typically a modest percentage, but it means the amount of electricity you stored is somewhat more than the amount you get out. This efficiency loss should be factored into any rough calculation of whether the rate difference makes the strategy worthwhile.
Solar interaction. If you have solar panels, the battery may charge from solar during the day rather than from the grid overnight. In that case, the arbitrage concept shifts slightly: you're using your own solar production during the peak rate window instead of drawing from the grid when it's expensive. This is a form of self-consumption optimization rather than pure arbitrage, and it can be quite effective in a sun-rich environment.
Questions to Ask Your Utility
Before making decisions based on TOU arbitrage assumptions, confirm:
- Is a TOU rate plan available to me, and what does it look like?
- Are there any restrictions on how battery-stored energy can be used under my rate plan?
- Can I export battery-stored electricity back to the grid, or only use it on-site?
- How often do rate schedules change, and how much notice do customers typically get?

- Is the battery system I'm considering capable of TOU scheduling?
- What monitoring will I have to verify the system is actually charging and discharging as scheduled?
- If my utility changes its rate structure, can the battery's programming be updated?
A Realistic Perspective
For most homeowners, energy arbitrage is one possible benefit of a home battery system — not necessarily the primary one. Backup power during outages, peace of mind during severe weather, and solar self-consumption optimization are often more compelling day-to-day benefits. Arbitrage can add to the system's value, but approaching it as the main return on investment requires careful thinking about your actual rate structure.
