Kilowatt-hour capacity, power output ratings, chemistry types, round-trip efficiency percentages — it's a lot of numbers to parse.
Here's the thing: for most homeowners, the deciding factors aren't the specs. They're the questions that specs don't answer. Here's a more useful framework.
Does It Work With What You Already Have?
If you have an existing solar system, compatibility matters a great deal. Some battery brands work seamlessly with the inverter brand already on your roof. Others require an additional converter or a full inverter replacement. The right battery for a home with a particular solar brand may be different from the right battery for a home with a different brand.
Before you get attached to a particular battery product, tell your electrician what solar equipment you already have. They can tell you which battery options are fully compatible versus which might require additional work.
What Does the Warranty Actually Cover?
Home battery warranties vary in what they promise and for how long. The main things to understand:
Duration. Most warranties run for a fixed number of years. Longer is generally better, but consider whether the company is likely to still exist and honor the warranty for that duration.
Capacity retention. Batteries degrade over time — they hold less charge than when they were new. A warranty that covers capacity retention guarantees that the battery will retain a minimum percentage of its original capacity at the end of the warranty period. A warranty that covers defects but not degradation is a different thing.
What voids it. Some warranties are voided by installation outside specified temperature ranges, by certain utility interactions, or by using the battery with non-approved equipment. Ask your installer to explain the terms before purchase.
Who Supports It Locally?
A battery system isn't a set-and-forget installation. Over a 10-15 year lifespan, you may need firmware updates, a service visit, or a warranty claim. The question isn't just whether the manufacturer has good support — it's whether the installer you're working with can actually service the system.
Ask your installer which brands they're certified to service, not just install. A battery installed by someone who's certified for that brand and has a relationship with the manufacturer is different from one installed by a general contractor working from a manual.
This is a question where local knowledge matters. An installer who has been working with a specific brand for several years, has handled service calls on it, and knows the manufacturer's warranty process is a better position to be in than one who is doing their first installation of a new product.
How Does It Perform in Your Climate?
All batteries have an operating temperature range. In New Mexico, summer ambient temperatures in garages and utility rooms can be high. Some battery chemistries handle heat better than others. If the battery will be installed in a space that gets very hot, this is a real consideration.
Ask your installer whether the battery they're recommending has any temperature-related limitations for your intended installation location, and whether additional ventilation or shade might be needed.
Is the App and Monitoring Useful?
Home battery systems come with monitoring apps that show you battery state of charge, solar production (if applicable), and energy flows. Some are straightforward and useful. Others are complicated or clunky.
This sounds like a minor factor, but you'll interact with this app regularly over the system's lifespan. It's worth looking at screenshots or a demo version before committing. Ask your installer which apps they've found to be most useful for homeowners.
The Right Framework
Rather than comparing spec sheets, think about these questions:
- Is this brand compatible with my existing solar equipment?
- What does the warranty actually cover, and for how long?
- Does my installer have certification and service history with this brand?
- Is the installation location appropriate for this battery's temperature requirements?
- Can I get a real answer to these questions before signing anything?
