Solar Changes the Equation
For homes with solar panels, the math around battery backup and AC is more favorable — particularly in summer. A sunny day in New Mexico produces significant solar energy, which can recharge a home battery while simultaneously powering AC loads. In practice, a solar-plus-battery home during a sunny summer outage may run AC during peak sun hours, charge the battery during the day, and run on battery through the evening with more flexibility than a battery-only installation.
This doesn't eliminate the capacity constraints entirely, but it changes the conversation from "can I run AC?" to "how do I manage the system through the day intelligently?"
What Good Backup Planning Looks Like
The most useful thing homeowners can do before talking to an electrician about battery backup is to write down their priorities:
- What absolutely cannot go offline?
- What would I strongly prefer to keep running?
- What am I willing to do without during an extended outage?
