Fans are underrated in a battery backup conversation. A ceiling fan or portable fan draws very little power compared to air conditioning and can make a room significantly more tolerable even when the temperature climbs. Including fan circuits in a backup plan extends the effective comfort window considerably.

Lighting is low-draw and high-value. LED bulbs use very little power, and having even a few lights working makes a home function much more normally during an evening outage.

Medical devices — CPAP machines, oxygen concentrators, insulin refrigerators, powered wheelchairs — should always be part of the priority conversation. If anyone in your household relies on electrically powered medical equipment, that circuit belongs on the backup panel, and the sizing discussion should account for its draw.

Communication and charging — a router, a few phone chargers, a laptop — keeps the household connected and informed. These loads are small and should be on every backup panel.

When you talk to an electrician about battery backup, the core question is: what do you want to run, and for how long? Those two inputs drive the sizing and configuration.

Bringing a clear list of priority loads to that conversation saves time and leads to a better result. You don't need exact wattage numbers — your electrician can look those up. What matters is that you've thought through the household's actual needs:

What a Battery System Can't Do

It's worth being realistic. A home battery system isn't infinite power. A single standard battery unit running a full central AC system will run out quickly. If your goal is whole-home comfort for an extended outage, you may need multiple battery units, or a conversation about whether a standby generator makes more sense for your situation.
