Summer cooling demands more electricity than almost anything else in a typical home. For houses with older electrical panels, that seasonal peak is often when underlying limitations become visible for the first time. Why Air Conditioning Draws So Much Power

Central air conditioning systems are among the highest-demand appliances in a home. Unlike a lamp or a phone charger, which draw modest and consistent amounts of power, an AC compressor draws a significant surge of electricity when it starts up — called an inrush current — then settles into its running draw. This pattern repeats each time the system cycles on.

Window units are individually smaller, but households often run several at once. The combined draw of multiple window units running simultaneously can be comparable to a central system, spread across multiple circuits.

In Albuquerque, where summer temperatures routinely climb above 95°F, AC systems run frequently through July and August. The electrical demand on a home's system during those months is substantially higher than during the rest of the year.

What Older Panels Were Designed For

Electrical panels are sized for the load they were expected to serve at the time they were installed. A home built in the 1960s or 1970s was designed around a very different set of appliances than a home today. Electric dryers, dishwashers, microwave ovens, multiple large televisions, home offices with multiple computers, and air conditioning in every room simply weren't the norm.

Signs That Summer Loads Are Stressing a Panel

Several observable signals suggest a panel is working near or beyond its design limits:

Breakers tripping frequently. An occasional tripped breaker is normal. Breakers that trip regularly during the same activities — running the AC while cooking, or running the microwave while the window unit is on — suggest that circuit is carrying more than it handles well.

Lights flickering when the AC kicks on. The brief dimming of lights when a large motor starts is often noticeable. Mild, momentary dimming is common, but sustained flickering or lights that dim noticeably and stay dim when the AC is running suggests a more significant voltage or capacity issue.

A panel that feels warm to the touch. The outside of the panel cabinet should not feel noticeably warm. A warm panel is a sign that something inside is working harder than it should.

Breakers that don't reset. A breaker that trips and won't reset, or that trips again almost immediately after being reset, is telling you something specific about that circuit. Don't keep resetting it — call an electrician.

A burning or electrical smell near the panel. This is the most serious signal and warrants an immediate call. A burning smell near the panel is a sign of heat damage or arcing, which is a fire risk.

What a Panel Assessment Involves

When an electrician assesses a panel, they look at the physical condition of the panel and its components, the load configuration, and whether the panel's capacity matches what the home is actually drawing. This isn't a long or complicated process — most assessments take an hour or less.

The outcome is clarity: either the panel is in reasonable shape and the symptoms have a different explanation, or the electrician can tell you what's actually happening and what your options are. Either answer is more useful than guessing.
